As India#39;s urban population mushrooms
and the middle class segment expands, the consequences
are bittersweet. A clear advantage is a higher standard
of living, but it is marred by a degraded environment,
poor planning and congestion. Given that the urban population
of the country is expected to double by the year 2021,
urban access and mobility systems that are viable, resource-conserving
and environment friendly are a must in order to sustain
growth and development. To meet this need, urban transit
planning is critical.
Recognizing the importance of a coordinated and integrated
approach, The Government of India (Ministry of Urban Development),
the Government of Andhra Pradesh, the Andhra Pradesh State
Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) and Infrastructure
Leasing and Financial Services Limited (IL&FS) came
together to form Urban Mass Transit Company (UMTC) - a
unique public private partnership to facilitate the design,
development and implementation of sustainable urban mobility
solutions across the country.
Encompassing the entire gamut of urban mobility solutions,
UMTC is a one-stop shop which delivers a wide array of
services, ranging from conceptualization, development,
implementation and operational support for transit projects.
Apart from this, it also assists State Governments with
restructuring and reforming their public transport delivery
systems.
UMTC focuses on providing urban transport planning that
is sensitive to the needs and constraints of urban India
while aiming to improve mobility through an integrated
and multimodal approach.
